How to use the HTML editor
- Type in the Visual view the way you would in a word processor: headings, bold, lists, links, tables, and images are all in the toolbar.
- Switch to Code to edit the HTML directly, with color highlighting, auto-closing tags, and folding. Code + preview shows the result live as you type.
- Pasted something from Word or Google Docs? Press Clean up HTML to strip the hidden formatting junk. Open Cleanup options to also remove styles, classes, or spans.
- Choose Snippet for content you'll paste into a blog, CMS, or newsletter, or Full page for a complete HTML file with a head and body.
- Use Format code to indent everything neatly or Minify to shrink it, then Copy HTML or Download .html.
When it comes in handy
- Cleaning up copy for a website. Paste an article from Word or Google Docs and get simple, clean HTML that won't fight your site's styles.
- Fixing a page by hand. Open an HTML file, find the problem in the code view, and check the fix in the live preview before you upload it.
- Product descriptions and listings. Format text with bold, lists, and tables for shops and marketplaces that accept HTML.
- Email newsletters. Start from the email template, which uses the table layout and inline styles most email apps need.
- Learning HTML. Make something in the visual editor, then flip to the code to see exactly which tags it made.
Frequently asked questions
Is my work uploaded or saved anywhere?
No. Everything happens in your browser. Your draft autosaves in this browser on this device so it's still there if you close the tab, and Clear editor and saved draft removes it. Nothing is sent to our server.
What's the difference between Snippet and Full page?
A snippet is just the content, like the body of a blog post, ready to paste into WordPress, Shopify, a CMS, or a newsletter. A full page is a complete HTML file with <html>, <head>, and <body>, ready to open in a browser or upload to a web host. Switching to Full page wraps your snippet in a page, and switching back keeps only the body.
What does Clean up HTML remove?
By default it removes the hidden formatting Word and Google Docs add when you copy text, like Mso classes, mso- styles, wrapper tags, and empty paragraphs, while keeping bold, italic, underline, links, lists, and tables. In Cleanup options you can also strip every inline style, class, ID, or span for the plainest possible HTML.
Will my scripts run?
Only in the preview, which runs in a sealed-off frame that can't touch the rest of this site or your saved data. You can turn scripts off in Code settings. The visual editor never runs scripts.
Why does the visual editor change my code?
Visual editors rewrite HTML in their own way, for example by wrapping loose text in paragraphs. If you need your code kept exactly as written, edit in the Code view. Code view changes are only rewritten when you press Format code, Minify, or Clean up HTML.
Can I add images?
Yes. Use the image button to link to an image online, or pick one from your device, which is embedded right in the HTML. Embedded images make the file much larger, so for websites it's usually better to upload the image to your site and link to it. Our Image Resizer can shrink it first.
What is minified HTML?
The same page with extra spaces, line breaks, and comments removed so the file is smaller. Browsers show it exactly the same. It's harder for people to read, so keep a formatted copy for editing.
